🍯 Homemade Thyme Syrup: Recipe, Benefits, and Storage Tips
Thyme syrup is a classic among our grandmothers’ natural remedies. Both soothing and delicious, it’s simply prepared with thyme, lemon, honey, and ginger. Ideal for fall or winter, it soothes sore throats and coughs while boosting immunity. At home, it’s become a ritual: a spoonful every morning to start the day off right, or a drizzle in an evening herbal tea to soothe the throat.
🧾 Ingredients & Equipment
For approximately 500 ml of syrup: 100 g fresh thyme (or 50 g dried), 2 organic lemons (juice and zest), 8 tbsp runny honey (ideally thyme), 1 small piece of fresh ginger, 500 ml filtered water.
Useful utensils: stainless steel saucepan, fine or muslin strainer, sterilized glass bottles, funnel, wooden spatula.
👩‍🍳 Step-by-step preparation
Thyme infusion: Bring the water to a boil, add the thyme, and let it steep for 20 minutes over low heat. Cover and let it sit for another hour.
Filtering & adding: Strain the infusion, pour the liquid back into the saucepan, add the lemon juice, honey, and grated ginger.
Reduction: Heat over very low heat for 20 to 30 minutes until it becomes syrupy. Check by placing a drop on a cold plate: it should bubble slowly.
Bottling: Pour the hot syrup into sterilized bottles, close immediately, and let it cool. The syrup is ready to enjoy the next day.
