This is a small animal but causes big consequences for health. How to get rid of it?

It’s a familiar scenario as soon as the temperature increases: you put out your garbage bags as usual, and there you have it…sh0ck! A swarm of tiny white worms is bursting at the bottom of your rolling garbage bin. Disgusting? Yes. Unavoidable? Thankfully not! But how do these crazy guests get there, and more crucially, how do you remove them once and for all?

Why Maggots Love Your Trash Can

Behind this storming lies a well-known insect: the fly. Attracted by the strong smell of fermentation, it looks for in your container a perfect little cozy nest to lay its eggs. As a result, after just a few days, the larvae—or maggots—take possession of the container. But don’t fear, simple and natural actions are enough to refresh order.

Boiling water: the d3adly weapon

The first thing to do is clear your trash can completely. Then, pour enough boiling water into it to completely flood the bottom. This extreme heat quickly gets rid of maggots . To eliminate them safely, pour the water down the sink while applying a colander or strainer to capture the residue.

To promote the action, add a few drops of dish soap to new hot water, then scrub the walls with a scouring brush. Once clean, let the bin air dry, ideally in direct sunlight. Humidity is these little creatures’ best friend, so remove it!

Salt: a circumspect but terrifying ally

If the idea of handling scalding hot water doesn’t excite you, there’s another simple trick: salt. A generous layer at the bottom of the trash can is enough to alleviate and get rid of the larvae. After a few hours, dig them out with a filter or a shovel, and off they go, into the trash bag.
