👩‍🍳 Instructions
1. Make the Chocolate Cake Layers
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three or four 8-inch round cake pans.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla.
Combine the wet and dry mixtures, then stir in the hot water or coffee until smooth.
Divide the batter evenly among the pans and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool completely.
2. Prepare the Orange Cream Filling
In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition.
Stir in the orange zest, fresh juice, and food coloring (if using). Beat until smooth and creamy with a light citrus scent.
3. Make the Chocolate Ganache
Heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and pour over the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl.
Let it sit for 2 minutes, then stir until smooth and glossy. Allow it to cool slightly so it thickens but remains pourable.
4. Assemble the Cake
Place the first cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of orange cream filling on top.
Repeat with remaining layers. Optionally, smooth the sides for a “semi-naked” look.
Pour the cooled ganache over the top and gently coax it to drip down the sides for a dramatic finish.
5. Decorate
Top with fresh orange slices, candied peel, or chocolate curls.
Chill the cake for at least 1 hour before slicing to allow the layers to set beautifully.
