The cactus is a succulent plant, that is, a tropical plant native to Brazil, where  it grows in a warm, humid and tropical climate.  The ideal temperature for this type of plant should be between 15 and 23 degrees and  with exposure to light, but indirect. When you live in a place that has mild and not very harsh winters, it is possible to let it live outdoors, taking care to protect it in the coldest season, so as not to expose it to possible frost  .

Even at Christmas, you should treat a cactus as a tropical plant. After watering it, you should let the water dry completely. Any water stagnation could  cause the roots to rot. Only if you live in a particularly humid house, will it be appropriate to place  a saucer with water and pebbles under the vase.  Once the water has evaporated, it will ensure that the plant absorbs the moisture it needs.

As a fertilizer, sugar can help nourish succulent plants by increasing their well-being, i.e. by dissolving  a little sugar in the water used to water the plants. However, the appropriate period for fertilization  ends with the flowering period.  The flowers of Christmas cactus bloom after  a dormant period of about four weeks. This process can be encouraged by making sure the plant has the elements it needs to thrive:  longer, cooler nights. Keep the plant in the dark for about 12-14 hours a day. If you don’t have a dark place to put it, you can  cover the Christmas cactus in a box  or with a clean cloth.
